Alpha Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Ranks #8 at 2017 Lightning Lap

Lightning Lap 2017 is an annual event where the year’s top performance cars come to compete in the ultimate track challenge. The event was held at Virginia International Raceway (VIR), on their longest configuration, the 4.1-mile Grand West Course. VIR’s Grand West Course is widely considered to be America’s most challenging road course.

We were extremely excited at Rairdon’s Alfa Romeo of Kirkland that one of the 19 cars that would be competing during this event was the Alpha Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. The Alpha Romeo Giula Quadrifoglio comes stock with a 2.9L Twin-Turbo V6 that boasts 505 Horse Power and 443 lb-ft of torque. It also comes with Leather & Alcantara seats, carbon fiber steering wheel, and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Alpha Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is one of the many Alpha Romeo models that can be leased or purchased from Rairdon’s Alfa Romeo of Kirkland.

Performance cars from across the industry are invited to Virginia International Raceway to compete in this challenge. The only rule, all cars must be unmodified production models. Like a classic boxing match, competitors are weighed at check-in and verified that no modifications have been made.

Day one and two of lightning lap were almost canceled. Drivers took to the course in hopes that burning rubber would help dry the course. Unfortunately, conditions did not improve, but the drivers still enjoyed themselves as rainwater rooster tailed from wheel wells as they sped down the open track.

Day three finally brought sunshine. The track was mostly dry with the exception of a puddle here and there. While a few wet spots on the track was not ideal, drivers were still able to get their vehicles up to speed. Most the day was clear, but rain clouds rolled back in by the afternoon. Day 3 was eventually called on account of rain.

Despite this unfortunate weather, they decided to stash all the performance vehicles for 2 weeks at an undisclosed location until they would have another opportunity to use the VIR Grand West Course allowing the drivers a clean shot at a great performance.

Two weeks pass and the weather does a 180. Rain clouds are replaced by sunshine and extreme heat, which allowed drivers to go all out on the course. Due to the extreme heat, the best laps recorded were generally in the morning or evening when the cooler air allowed for better peak performance. It was reported that in some cases this made up to a full second difference when compared to the laps run in the heat of the day.

Drivers spent three days analyzing track data in order to understand where they were gaining and loosing time. They collected data from every lap using the Race Logic lap timers, which are the industry standard for data logging. The data logger is placed securely on the dashboard of the car and then connected to an antenna placed on the roof of the car so that data can be accurately collected via GPS.

Drivers spent several days memorizing and racing the VIR track. After the final track times were submitted, the experts analyzed the data and the final numbers for Lightning Lap 2017 were submitted.

Rairdon’s Alpha Romeo of Kirkland was excited to see that the Alfa Romeo Guilia Quadrifoglio was ranked number 8 overall. It was an impressive performance from a unique and innovative production sports car. The Ferrari inspired Alpha Romeo Guilia Quadrifolglio proved that you can have a 4-door enthusiast car with all the performance of a 2-door sports car. The closest comparisons for the Alpha Romeo Guillia Quadrifoglio were the Porsche Panamera Turbo and the Mercedes-AMG E63 S. The Alpha Romeo Guilia Quadrifolglio bested the Porsche Panamera Turbo by almost a full second. The Mercedes-AMG E63 S managaged to beat the Alpha Romeo at lightning lap, but when we take a look at the numbers the Alpha Romeo sells for almost $40,000 less than the Porsche and the Mercedes.
